1. Braaivleis – A South African Camping Favourite
There are few meals more authentically South African than a good braai.
Braaivleis is perfect campfire food after a day on the road. In fact, a braai isn’t simply a way of cooking in South Africa – it’s part of the experience.
You’ll need an open fire and a braai grid. Depending on what you’ve picked up along your journey, you can prepare a variety of meat over the coals.
To complete the experience, serve your braaivleis with traditional South African sides such as tomato and onion relish and mieliepap.
The beauty of a braai is its simplicity. Find a beautiful campsite, light the fire and enjoy the evening at your own pace.
2. Steamed Bread
Everybody loves fresh bread, and somehow it tastes even better when you’re enjoying it under the stars during a 4×4 self-drive trip through Africa.
This simple steamed bread can be prepared with dates and nuts, making it a great addition to your collection of 4×4 camping recipes.
What You’ll Need
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Apricot nectar
- Dates
- Chopped nuts
You can also experiment with ingredients such as cranberries or raisins depending on what you have available.
How to Prepare It
Start by combining the dry ingredients.
Slowly stir in the apricot nectar until everything is combined, then add your chosen amount of dates and nuts.
Place the dough into a suitable cooking container and cover it with foil. Put the container on a rack inside a larger pot or pan with water underneath. The aim is to create enough steam to slowly cook the bread.
Once cooked, carefully remove the container, turn the bread onto a plate, slice it and enjoy it while it’s still warm.
3. Easy Campfire Stew
A campfire stew is ideal for 4×4 travel because you can adapt the recipe according to whatever ingredients you have available.
You can use vegetables such as potatoes, green beans, carrots, peas and onions. Feel free to experiment with other ingredients you find along your journey.
Add tomato sauce and gravy to turn everything into a hearty stew.
Combine your ingredients in a pot, add the sauce and gravy, and cook until everything is heated through and the flavours have combined.
It’s simple, versatile and works equally well whether you’re cooking for two people or a larger group.
